If you’ve never had a great michelada, you’re missing one of the most refreshing beer drinks around. It’s bright, savory, a little spicy, and incredibly satisfying on a hot summer day. While there are countless variations, every good michelada strikes a balance between fresh flavors and a crisp, easy-drinking beer.
A Little History
Like many great food and drink traditions, the exact origin of the michelada is up for debate. One popular story traces it back to Mexico in the 1960s, where a customer named Michel reportedly ordered his beer over ice with lime, salt, and a few sauces. Other stories suggest it evolved naturally from earlier beer cocktails served throughout Mexico.
However it began, the michelada has become a staple throughout Mexico and the American Southwest. Every region-and often every restaurant-puts its own spin on the recipe.
What’s in a Michelada?
There isn’t a single “correct” recipe, and that’s part of the fun. Some versions are light and citrus-forward, while others lean into bold, savory flavors.
Our mix starts with two ingredients that many michelada lovers will recognize: Clamato and Valentina hot sauce. From there, we build layers of flavor with a blend of seasonings and other ingredients that give our michelada its signature character. The exact recipe stays in-house, but the goal is always the same: a balanced drink where no single ingredient overpowers the others.
The South of Shaw Way
We like to keep things simple.
Our micheladas are served over ice in a tall glass and mixed about 50/50 with a light lager, creating a refreshing drink that’s full of flavor without being heavy.
And because you ordered a full beer, we serve the remaining beer alongside your michelada in a small sidecar. Top off your glass whenever you like, or enjoy the rest of the beer on its own. We think that’s the way it should be.
Take It Home
One of the questions we hear most often is, “Can I buy your mix?”
The answer is yes.
We bottle our house-made michelada mix right here at the brewery so you can enjoy your favorite michelada wherever you happen to be. Just add your favorite light lager, pour over ice, and you’re ready to go. It’s perfect for backyard barbecues, camping trips, beach days, or simply relaxing at home.
